Christmas with Kids and Half-Decorated Trees

The holidays bring lots of excitement to people everywhere. But, there is something about seeing Christmas through the eyes of a child that makes the season magical. Over the years, as my brother and I got older, the holidays were always nice, and we welcomed it, but as adults it didn't seem to have the same luster that it once had. That was until last year.

Before Gardner, Jerry and I didn't really see the point in decorating our home. It was just for us after all. Now don't get me wrong, I wouldn't put us in the same category as Scrooge. We didn't go around saying, "Bah-humbug!" We just sought enjoyment from spending time with family. Getting gifts was of course always welcomed too, but our holidays had become flat.

Last year Gardner experienced his first Christmas. He was just 3 months old, but that was even more reason to deck the halls with our first Christmas tree, wrap presents, put them beneath the tree, and sit on Santa's lap again for the first time in years. Gardner slept through most of these festivities, but his presence still impacted us.

I personally get a twinkle in my eye when I think about Christmas these days. I know that I will have so many more to share with Gardner and baby number two when he or she arrives. Each Christmas will become exponentially more special than the last.

Having a little one around makes me feel like a kid again. Christmas with kids revived our holidays like never before. Even though Gardner still doesn't know what's going on, and quite frankly is afraid of Santa, I find myself wanting to enjoy the season more than before. I want to build a tradition with him and share my favorite songs.

This year, we decorated our tree again, even though it is half decorated because those with little kids know that you can't put ornaments on the bottom half of the tree for fear that busy hands will take them off! This is just another fond memory for us to talk about in years to come.

Memories are the things that can never be taken away. I hope to build strong ones with my family for years to come. Merry Christmas and Happy Holidays to all! Hug your kids and start creating your own festive memories.
