Mission Possible! Believing in Your Organization

If you would have told me upon graduating college that I would spend most of my twenties working with government officials I would have told you that you were crazy. In college I loved planning events, but using it in the government atmosphere was the furthest thing from my mind. In fact, I don't know that I would have ever applied for a job in the government industry, but after 4.5 years in the government climate, I wouldn't have it any other way.

Like most event professionals I fell into work that I love. However, unlike many event professionals I knew that event planning was my forte and I sought a college degree that was tailored to this profession.

There is something that keeps me going as an event professional that goes beyond my desire to simply do a good job. While I love expanding my knowledge, putting on quality events, and connecting with my clients, it is the mission of the organization and my belief in it that keeps my passion alive.

Here is the mission statement of the UNC School of Government:

I can confidently say that I work daily at my job to improve the lives of people that live in my state. Now, I am not the one standing in front of the clients updating them on that latest laws or providing leadership tools to help them manage their employees or best practices for doing their jobs. I simply make sure that they have materials copied, food to eat, and a name tag upon check-in. Still, I love that I am contributing a small part to a larger mission.

Keeping your passion alive at your job may mean different things for different people. However, I think it all starts with the mission. Our Dean, Mike Smith believes fervently in our mission and this is contagious within the organization.

Believing in the mission of the organization I work for fuels my passion. What about you? What keeps you going as an event professional?
