As I lay my toddler down to sleep

As I lay my toddler down to sleep.
Stories from his day begin to seep.

Tossing and turning he's wide awake,
And it is more than I can take.

I tell him it's no longer time for play,
Despite my insistence he will not lay.

Now he's singing, delirious I see,
About squishing a baby bumblebee.

I start to drift and close my eyes,
I wonder what time he'll wake to rise.

Bless my toddler, he won't stop;
But here I am, about to drop.

Night after night, the same routine;
It's like nothing else I've seen.

Yet, there's nothing else I'd rather do,
But listen to him sing and say I love you.

This season of life will end some day,
So tonight... tonight I lay.
