Last week was a busy, busy week! Sea Trail hosted our 2015 Annual Conference for NC SGMP. The property was so beautiful, the camaraderie superb, and the education went smoothly. As a whole it was a successful conference.
Dr. Kevin Snyder kicked us off encouraging us to "Think Differently." He was very high energy and got us on our feet (and even dancing on chairs). The idea? To go out and conquer fear, have a vision (even if it's not a popular one), and bring our passion out in everything we do. It was a fantastic start to our conference.
Putting conferences together isn't easy. I began working on this conference approximately 9 months ago. I usually work on the logistics of a conference after the agenda is set, so that part wasn't new. However, bringing all the speakers together to provide quality education was a new endeavor. It made me appreciate the job that the faculty I work with do for every program. Every time we hold a conference or training our faculty at the School of Government recruit experts to come and speak to their groups. However, for SGMP it was my turn, and it was more difficult than it looked!
I left the conference on a high. I was able to learn a lot about what my upcoming role is going to be for the next two years as President of NC SGMP. As a result, I am both excited and overwhelmed. Tackling a fear and trying something new is exactly what Dr. Snyder was talking about during his presentation. Here I am ready to lead a group of government meeting professionals, and I have no idea what kind of challenges are ahead. I can only use my knowledge, leadership, and organization skills and hope for the best. Luckily, I have a fantastic team of supporters around me and I know that there are a lot of people that will be helping me out along the way.
I am passionate about all the work I do, and I think that's what drives me to tackle such a new project. Listening to Dr. Snyder made me think about the kind of vision that I want to have for the chapter. I can't wait to take everything I learned about working with virtual teams, maximizing my benefits from SGMP, and collaborating with a board and put it all to use.
Thanks to those that helped make this conference possible and here's to a bright and exciting future!
