Back in September I agreed to speak at our first Society of Government Meeting Professionals (SGMP) meeting of the year for North Carolina. I've spoken a few times and as the President, I was especially excited to address the group about our goals for the year. I had just 10 minutes or so before we called the meeting to order when I noticed I was in trouble...
I looked down at my dress that seemed to be pulling and found that the strap had come loose! There was no way that I could get through an entire presentation with a loose strap. I would be exposed and incredibly self-conscious about losing my top the entire time. I was completely embarrassed, and desperately needed to think of a solution.
I began rummaging through my laptop bag. Surely there was something in here that I could use to get this strap to stay up. The presentation was just an hour after all. I dug into the bag. There are many items in my laptop bag: important papers, business cards, PowerPoint slide advancers. Then I found it. A pin from the National Capital Chapter that I had acquired from the National SGMP Conference in Minneapolis last spring. Thank you NATCAP!!
Quickly, I took the pin and pushed it through the top of my dress and through my strap.
SUCCESS!!
I couldn't believe it. The show would go on after all.
I seem to be prone to these wardrobe malfunctions. (See Confessions of an Event Planner from July 30 about my ripped skirt that had torn to the point of nearly no return. Spoiler alert: I recovered then too, but not without incident!)
These things certainly make for funny stories. I'm all about coming up with creative solutions to disastrous problems. I'll continue to try and keep my wardrobe under control.
