The pandemic forced everyone to stay home. When it came time to vacation, we all got it out of our systems. Here we are again, and the staycation is back. Fret not. School breaks with family are great. Get the most out of your free time at home. Here are some tips on how to do just that courtesy of Danielle Rivenbark.
Prepare at Work
When you're getting ready to take some time off from work, there are a few things you can do to prepare so that your vacation goes smoothly. First, it's a good idea to let your boss or clients know well in advance that you'll be taking some time off. It's also a good idea to tie up any loose ends at work before you leave. This means completing any unfinished projects and double-checking that everything is in order before you go. Finally, make sure to set an out-of-office message on your email so that people know you're away and won't expect a prompt response to their messages.
Get to Know Your Neighborhood
Many families live in or near a town with a wealth of attractions. Does your city have a zoo? How about museums? One way to find out exactly what there is to do in your city is by looking at its Convention and Visitors Bureau page. Make a list of the places you and your family want to see and plan to visit them during your staycation, just as you would when visiting another city.
If you want to expand your options past your own city, The Discoverer points out that taking a short road trip is a great way to get out. Nearby cities are often just as overlooked as your own and have a wealth of fun family activities. Day trips can keep you staying in your own home, or you can spend a night at a nearby hotel.
Enjoy Backyard Camping
Sleeping under the stars is a real treat, but sometimes all the time spent lugging everything you need for a long camping trip can be difficult. Why not pitch a tent in your own backyard or join in on the glamping trend? You maintain access to your own house for all the comforts of home (indoor plumbing, anyone?) while still getting to unplug and enjoy time outside. The perks of glamping include gear such as pillows, blankets, luxury, and a change of scenery. If you don't want to do it yourself, there are many companies that will rent you glamping gear and set it up in your yard so all you have to do is relax and enjoy.
Make Your Staycation Pet-Friendly
Don’t forget to include every member of your family, including your pets. Go Pet Friendly suggests fun staycation ideas like planning a home spa day, packing a picnic, and making time for special treats. It may be the ideal time to look into new products for your furry family members. Before you purchase items like a dog crate, a kitty climbing tower, and toys, go online and check out ratings and reviews from trusted veterinarians and other experts. This will ensure you’re getting the best buy on durable and safe items.
Prepare for an Addition to the Family
There are all kinds of reasons for the staycation. One of the best is that mama can’t travel because mama’s expecting. In the event of a pregnant woman in the house, all efforts must refocus to keep her happy and comfortable at all costs while she prepares for the little one. Whether she’s attending Lamaze classes or painting the nursery, a roomy but flattering nursing and maternity T-shirt, for instance, will allow her to lounge, with a hidden underlayer for easy breastfeeding. Consider some good learning materials, too, especially if this is a first-time mom, or even a subscription box.
Create Your Own Attractions
Some families choose to make their own backyard a neighborhood destination. This could include installing a swimming pool and water slides, sports fields or courts, or an amazing playground space. This will require some work but is enjoyable forever.
No matter where you live, planning a staycation is a great way to save money and stay safe while still getting to enjoy time with your family, including your pets. So, make sure you’ve got everything ready to go at work, explore your neighborhood, and start looking around for great activities that can keep you and your family entertained without having to leave town.
