As you know, I woefully posted about "Saying Goodbye To My Only Child". The first full day home postpartum was the start of the test. The big question was will Gardner adjust well to a new baby? The initial answer seemed to be yes and I have this sweet story to share.
I told Gardner that I needed to change Caitiejane's diaper. Gardner was in the other room playing and just out of eye sight, but when I told him what I was doing, he came running. He curiously followed me into Caitiejane's room and walked around a bit. He doesn't get to go into her room very often, so he really enjoys when we're in there.
Caitiejane doesn't like to be cold, so when she was being changed she began crying. Big brother Gardner then found a pacifier on the nightstand, picked it up, and brought it to me. I thought it was such a sweet gesture. Somehow, he knew that this would soothe her. It was odd that he knew this considering he had never liked a pacifier and that he's just 20 months old.
I immediately called my husband to tell him about the sweet thing Gardner had done. Jerry interpreted the gesture as trying to get his baby sister to stop crying... a means to an end, rather than a valiant and thoughtful deed. I choose to think that he truly cares about his baby sister. Hopefully that sticks, because they will be siblings for life.
