15 Things I've Learned about Living in the Country

Here is my personal list about what I've learned and now love about living in the country and trying to raise kids here too. For those that don't know we live on 16 acres, have lots of dogs, chickens, and a garden. And while town is not all that far away, you certainly have to plan if you're going to go there. So living "in the middle of nowhere" in a place not many people have heard of, does have its perks.

  1. While driving, no need to move over for tractors and other farm equipment. They move over for you.
  2. The number of engines on a train will dictate how long you will sit at a railroad crossing.
  3. Naming your chickens means you will never eat them. Even if their egg laying days are over.
  4. Crops have seasons: tobacco is a summer crop and cotton is a fall crop (I love cotton season it is by far my favorite).
  5. There is nothing more peaceful than pulling into the big yard at the end of the day knowing that it's just you and your family for the weekend.
  6. On a clear night, you can see stars and sometimes planets you never would have seen in the city.
  7. Most of the family lives nearby.
  8. Me Ma makes the best dinners, and there is nothing better than hearing the dinner bell.
  9. Sweet tea is a food group, and a staple at every meal.
  10. Open space to play is never a problem.
  11. The woods offer so much opportunity for adventure.
  12. You have to plan to go to town.
  13. When there is snow on the road we wait for it to melt.
  14. When we are under tornado watch we pray.
  15. Four wheelers are the preferred method of transportation.

What are some of your favorite parts about where you live? I'd love to hear them.
