Finding your Baby Shower Theme

Jerry and I have decided to go with a Wizard of Oz themed nursery for our newest addition and our shower will reflect that too. I love decorating and creating invitations. This creative part of me is not utilized very much in my current position with the School of Government, so when I have an opportunity to "flex my creative muscles" I seize the opportunity.

Generating a party theme can be tough, but here are some strategies and ideas for you to use when selecting a baby shower theme.

Match the Nursery

In our case we are using the nursery decor as the theme for our baby shower. It is a natural fit for us to be able to fit these things seamlessly together. After all, "There's no place like home!"

Pick something you both like

Nowadays both moms and dads are attending baby showers. After all, you both created this little human right? Try to find something that both mom and dad are passionate about or enjoy. This could be superheros, zoo animals, aquariums, cars, owls, princesses... ok maybe your husband isn't into princesses, but if he's expecting a little princess perhaps he can get on board.

Scour Pinterest

Surely someone out there on social media has an adorable theme that you can borrow for your own! I believe that borrowing an idea is the highest form of flattery, so get "pinning" with ideas for your next baby shower.

Go with color

You may decide to go the route of specific colors instead of items. I think this is perfectly acceptable to do as well. Why not go with purple and green if that's your fancy over pink and white or shades of blue?

Sports

Start inspiring your little one to root for your favorite sports team. It's never to early to make them a fan right? Unless of course you have a house divided as is the case with my husband and I. He would have loved to make Gardner's nursery and baby shower a Washington Redskins theme, but as a New York Giants fan I have to draw the line! UNC Tar Heels would have been an acceptable choice though.

Food

Having food as the basis of your baby shower can certainly make menu planning easy. If you both love barbecue or seafood or candy make it the central part of your baby shower theme. Who doesn't love food right?

Conclusion

Make it fun! After all, this is about welcoming new life to your household. Everyone will be so excited to celebrate whether it's your first, second, or third child.

As a side tip: keep it about the child you're expecting and less about the gifts you receive. Although baby showers used to be only for the first child as a way to help the parents get everything they needed for the baby's arrival. Tradition has changed and it is now common to have one for the second or even the third. The focus of the second and third child is more about celebrating their upcoming arrival and less about getting the items you need.
