The Power of Relationship Building

I remember when webinars, conference calling, and other event technology first came about. Everyone was afraid that technology would over take the meeting industry and there would be no need for face-to-face meetings anymore. These fears were eventually squashed and the events industry continued on. Face-to-face meetings are not going away and in fact the meeting and event industry is booming! The reason? Relationships.

There is nothing more valuable to an event planner than their network. I was going to say Rolodex, but I think that this term is old these days because technology has eliminated the need for a paper Rolodex and instead we rely on our email contact list instead.

I'm currently working on finalizing the details of our NC SGMP conference and I couldn't help but think about the relationships that I've built within the chapter. I have so many people that I can lean on to help me plan conferences for my clients, and ask for ideas when I come across an issue in the planning process. These relationships are invaluable to me.  It is nice to have a sounding board to talk with various hoteliers and planners.

There is a wonderful gentleman working out all the event details for our conference and my experience with him has been fantastic. He has responded to about 50 emails I've sent him over the past two days and is reviewing every last detail. This relationship that I'm building with him is so important, especially when I think about potentially bringing my clients to his property.

Experience is everything.  As a planner, I love when someone on site can make my job easier and he is doing just that.  Because he's making such an impression and building a relationship with me I will definitely put this property on the list to consider for my future conferences.  It has absolutely made my experience worthwhile.
